S’WAKIAN PICKED TO
HEAD MAS KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines
(MAS) has appointed Idris Jala, 47, as its new managing director effective
Dec 1, 2005, following an extensive executive search. Idris is currently vice
president of Shell Malaysia Gas and Power and managing director of Shell
Middle Distillates Synthesis (SMDS) Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a multinational plant
in Sarawak, MAS said in a statement yesterday. It added that Idris, who is a
kelabit from the Bario Highlands in Sarawak, has successfully led the
business turnaround of SMDS since taking on the role in 2003. He has been
with Shell since June 1982. Idris oversees Shell Malaysia's business in the
liquefied natural gas (LNG) and gas-to-liquid sector and has extensive
experience at helping Shell operations globally with significant business
challenges in the downstream industry. He replaces Datuk Ahmad Fuaad
Dahlan who retired on Aug 22, 2005. "As I am not from the airline
industry, I will have to learn fast. I will do my best to work with everyone
in Malaysia Airlines. I believe the key to business turnaround lies in
unleashing the talents of everyone in MAS," Idris said. "Given
Idris' varied experience and track record in Shell, the MAS board is
confident that Idris is well qualified to help MAS address its business challenges
and opportunities," MAS' chairman Datuk Dr. Munir Majid said. Idris has held various posts
both in Malaysia and overseas in human resources, retail, liquefied petroleum
gas (LPG), business development consultancy, business re-engineering, MAS
said. The airline said Idris also previously held the position of vice
president of business development consultancy, Shell International, based in
London. "His remit was to lead a high caliber global team of in-house
consultants to help the downstream business in Shell worldwide deliver
significant business results through strategic marketing and business
improvement initiatives," it added. MAS said Idris completed his
bachelor's degree in development studies from Universiti Sains Malaysia,
Penang, in 1982. Upon graduation, he won the Bishen Kaur Award as the top
student in development studies, is said. Later, he was given a Shell
scholarship which enabaled him to obtain a master's degee in industrial
relations at the University of Warwick in England, it added. - Bernama (source: The Borneo Post - Fri,
9 Sept 2005) MAS TAGS HIGH-OCTANE
OILMAN NEW MD A GUITAR-PLAYING, TROUBLE-SHOOTING HIGH-FLIER FROM SHELL The KUALA LUMPUR,
Thurs. The man to put the gloss back on one of the country’s
best-known brands — Malaysia Airlines (MAS) — has been found. Now
Idris Jala has to learn about the airline business quickly, put his
considerable management experience of 23 years at Shell to use and learn to
live with the weight of expectations that comes with being in the hot seat.
He will become the managing director and chief executive officer of the
national carrier on Dec 1. The 47-year-old veteran oil executive said:
"I will have to learn fast. I will do my best to work with everyone in
MAS. I believe the key to business turnaround lies in unleashing the talent
of everyone in MAS." Idris replaces Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Dahlan, who retired suddenly
on Aug 22 — the same day the airline announced a loss of RM280.7
million for the April-June quarter. Idris is currently the managing director
of Shell MDS (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, the petroleum company’s middle
distillates plant in Sarawak, his birthplace. He has worked at Shell units
around the world, including the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka and Holland, said
Malaysia Airlines in a statement. MAS chairman Datuk Dr Munir Majid said given Idris’
varied experience and track record in Shell, the airline board was confident
that he was well-qualified to help MAS address its business challenges and
opportunities. The airline is currently run by a committee headed by Munir
and newly-appointed executive director Tengku Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul
Aziz. Ahmad Fuaad’s resignation prompted reports that a
foreigner could be brought in to improve the fortunes of the national
carrier. This was later denied by Khazanah Nasional, which holds a 69.3 per
cent interest in the airline. It is believed that discussions with Idris to
take over the top job have been intensive in the last few weeks Sources say that he is highly regarded in Shell and has been
mentioned as a potential chairman of its operations here.
