The
Malaysian Airlines Rural Air Service is living up to form as usual! Despite
having been on the Wait List for nearly six weeks, passengers headed for
Bario had to try their luck on long Standby Lists at Miri airport. As a result, three days into the new
school term, the last of our students are still slowly trickling in! Perhaps,
one day, the RAS might consider laying on an extra flight or two...? Bario's
Internet Cafe is finally back online again, and fairly ringing with pagang music as people log
onto Kelabit Net. Opening times: It appears there was a slight problem
with the hub, whatever that is, and it had to be taken down to Miri for
repair. The rice
harvest has begun in earnest in Bario. However, quite a lot of our old folk
are handicapped by a shortage of labour. It appears that the Indonesians labourers are busy harvesting
their rice as well, and will not become available for another week or two.
The few that have trickled in have been quickly snapped up and put to work.
Japanese experts on the possible use of solar and wind power to
meet Bario's energy needs. He added that a road from Bakelalan to
Bario was being planned. Bario
appears to be the flavour of the month! Both Sarawak's Minister of
Tourism, Dato Sri Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Openg, as well as the
Federal Minister of Tourism, show a definite interest in promoting Bario as a
major tourist destination. One attraction they wish to add to the Bario armoury is the
horse-drawn carriage! |
